Dorian Gray

Writer/Director

Adapted from the novel by Oscar Wilde

Incognito Theatre

The Pleasance, Islington

The Pleasance Dome, Edinburgh Fringe Festival

125 years after it first scandalised the world Incognito Theatre returned to the Fringe with their darkly satirical and physically playful take on Wilde’s gothic fable and ask: Endless youth, eternal beauty…what price would you pay?

"The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it…” So the lascivious Lord Henry teaches the impressionable Dorian Gray. In a desperate bid to maintain his youthful beauty, and experience all the pleasures the world has to offer, Dorian unwittingly sells his soul and sets himself on a path of lavish debauchery and secret sin from which there may be no coming back…

A company borne of the staggering young talent of Young Pleasance, Incognito first burst onto the Fringe with their dazzlingly inventive sell-out version of Government Inspector. This year the “immensely talented ensemble” [Fest] use their striking physical theatre techniques to breathe vivid new life into Oscar Wilde’s only novel. Darkly witty, irreverent, and physically sensuous, this adaptation of a timeless tale of innocence lost and sold promises a slick visual feast reflective of Wilde’s own sumptuous language and questioning our obsessive modern idolisation of youth and beauty.
